Fairmount Presbyterian - Your Community Church - 2535 Fairmount Church Road - Sewickley, PA 15143
About Us
Fairmount Presbyterian Church is focused on worshiping God through the Lord Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.
We hope to serve families and individuals who are seeking light, love and life. The light is Jesus, who is the way to find God's truth and integrity; love is found in a community which adores a personal God and supports each member, because God first loved us; life is given by God so that you can have peace, joy and growth as the Holy Spirit works in you, fulfilling the reason you were created: To Glorify and Enjoy God by loving Him and the People He made for all of us to love and serve!

Why the Church?
God's love and light are gifts that he gives to individuals not only for themselves but to create life together.  Jesus died for His Church, called in the Bible, His Body and His Bride.  While the Church is made up of individuals who are drawn to Jesus for a very personal relationship with God, it is essential to that relationship that we be drawn into a Body of believers  The Church is here, by God's grace, to be a society of love, light and life to the world around her.  Jesus established His Church to draw others into the life of the Spirit by means of the truth (light) of Jesus' Word by the Power of God's grace and love. Our job at Fairmount Church, then, is to provide the truth through Biblical proclamation, renew life through classical worship, and spread love by personal fellowship, and Christian service.  In the trials and difficulties of day-to-day living, God gives grace and power to find wholeness, healing and purpose not just as individuals, but as a family, a community, a gathered Body of followers of Jesus the Messiah.  The Bible calls God's relationship with His people today "the New Covenant."  Fairmount is a covenant community that meets weekly to renew their relationship with God and one another through prayer, praise, Scripture study and Communion (presently the first Lord's Day of the Month).

A Little History
Fairmount Church was established as your community congregation  in 1822, and has been living  and serving Sewickley and Franklin Park ever since.  We have folks out in the cemetery who were born before the French and Indian War!  But, most of them no longer attend church over here, at least as far as we can see. Seems they found a more beautiful sanctuary than ours (i.e. a heavenly sanctuary).  We hope you can someday too.  But, meanwhile, our house of worship is pretty - you should see our little country church!

We meet weekly on Sunday mornings at 9:45 AM to worship the Lord and fellowship with one another.  We also have Bible Studies and special gatherings to enjoy the Lord and His people. (We are studying 1 Peter at King's Resturant in Wexford at 6:00 AM on Tuesday mornings - you can come join us, or just eavesdrop if you like!)

Members, Officers, Choirs...
Our pastor since 2004 is Tony Cowley, a 1990 graduate of the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary who served congregations in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania and Minneola, Kansas before coming to Fairmount.  Pastor Cowley married Natalie Rose in 1981 and together they have five Children (ages 10 to 25 - photo from 2005).  Their eldest daughter married a fine young man named Josh and they live in Wichita, KS. Their eldest son graduated from Kansas State University on May 16th, 2009, and their middle daughter will be starting college next week @ CCAC.
Tony does most of the preaching and also some visitation in homes and hospitals along with Bible studies and pre-marital counseling.  And with Natalie (sometimes) other counseling as needed.
We have other officers as well - Elders, Trustees and Deacons - who all serve the church:
Our board of elders currently has two men serving, Charles Kulbacki and Tony Atkinson.  They pray for our folks and help oversee the life of the congregation.  They assist the pastor in leading studies and meeting with people for advice, counsel and prayer.  If you are sick the elders pray for you and anoint you with oil according to the directions of James Chapter 5.  They also visit in homes, and nursing homes with the pastor, or on their own, or with other members of the church.
Our trustee board are deacons who care for the building and grounds of the Church and parsonage, doing lots to keep things up and running.  They coordinate work days when many hands make lighter work.  They cooperate with the elders and the other deacons, and are an important part of the life of the church.
Our board of caring deacons help those in need of prayer and other kinds of assistance.  They deserve the title caring deacons.  They lead the women (mostly) in coordinating special events.  When we have a luncheon, no one goes home hungry! Deacons are servants and these people are ordained servants just like the pastor and elders.
We have an active choir, which Natalie directs with much good help from our organist, Mrs. Kay Baumann.  The choir performs anthems, or sometimes leads the congregation in learning a new song or hymn. Other times soloists, or small groups, give a song. We are a singing church, and love to praise the Lord together in song!

But, you don't have to be an officer to be special - every baptized believer, whether man, woman, girl, or boy is a priest unto God, and all the members are ministers and servants of the Lord Jesus Christ and our fellow human beings.

We  are a congregation which takes God, His truth and worship very seriously - but we do try to have a sense of humor about ourselves.  If you're worried about visiting such a holy gathering, don't worry, we're just people like you.  Even though we are saints at Fairmount, we're also still flawed people known as sinners.  The fancy Latin term for this is Simul Justus Et Peccator.  We experience this tension in life every day, so we ought to be able to take a stab at explaining it to any who ask.  Come, join Fairmount in the battle for life, light and love.  Jesus has victory for you!

We would welcome the opportunity to meet you, and help you in any way we can to "taste and see that the Lord is Good!" (Psalm 34).
